Ha ha! Been to Number 1 on charts 1 a couple times in Nashville music demographic, it did nothing for advancing me as an artist, writer, network songs or contacts. The one good thing, you are able to post work on Spotify, which is real. Not going away and its easier to say to people I have had similar negative experiences with this site, however there are the Crowd Reviews.
Here is my experience with promoting songs. I have been on Reverbnation for a while now, I love it! I have been reading these reviews from artists whining about not getting recognition, you have to put a lot more work into your career than just upload your songs and expect someone to come knocking at your door, I don't care how good you are!
It has to be your life, you must live and breathe it, if you aren't willing to work for success, you are in the wrong business! Have a great day! Johnny Bhive.
I'm not fully aware of what the charts mean, but I've recently had a song be 1local, 2 regionally, 95 nationally and globally, and a different song being listened to by a committee of some sort. I too had a 10 review. Half great, half bad, which is fine by me, cause ya gotta believe or don't bother. Honestly, a large percentage of the music I hear isn't very good, but there has been a few wonderful artists I've run into.
Music will always be subjective, like clothes and food. ReverbNation, like all contests you PAY to enter will probably not make your career. The jury's still out, but so far, so good. My overall opinion of RN remains about the same - they host my website - the Site Builder templates are simple but not elegant. But there is not much detail furnished from them or anywhere about their marketing model - which I actually didn't understand as I implied in my first review.
From personal experience I've noted a few observations - both general and related to marketing. I've used most of their distribution offerings - including: 1 Fan Reach - the best utility offered. There are many others but if these don't deliver some result - then alternatives have to very competitive. Fan Reach is basically a distribution client that allows an artist to contact any subscriber on the lists mentioned.
There are options to also send the same to FaceBook and any other media with a list of your subscribers. This is an essential service that works fine. It is not well-defined what a 'music site' is - but I would expect music blog, personal music list sharing and such. I would not expect any pay services or radio streaming sites - but it is not clear.
The fee varies depending on the number of distro sites used by RN - which suggests the size of the targeted streaming audience you want to reach. Once a campaign is started - statistics are provided - as an example of a 1-week campaign: total number of Ad Views - , number of websites with Ads - , number of Fan Interactions - But, the total number of Interactions can mean someone liked your cover photo, your artist or song name. But not that the song has been sampled or played.
As a result the campaign may not contribute much to your RN fanbase or song plays at all. This is the chance you take - I usually gain a few of each - but I always choose to spend about Campaign stat 3 Single Song Promotions - RN has offers to promote a single song based on some internal criteria - and for They are a list of individuals answers to a review after listening to your submitted song.
There may a reward consisting of a one-time spot on the RN Homepage. The criteria is having an average review of 7. The song I submitted fell far short of the 7. The statistics provided are interesting and well-formatted. As most RN members know - your receive a lot of 'Opportunities' that you can 'Reach 3 million fans' or win an 'Exclusive Interview'.
I have had no luck when entering these 'contests'. Most are judged by RN then the contest promoter - presumably by RN first. But I would be curious if there is any bias introduced from RN first judging a song that perhaps they have already rejected once - a question that I will ask the folks at RN soon. If I were them, I would sell the contest win for a fair fee - it's just business.
Another aspect of the RN fanbase. Since it is a forum used by artists - it is also almost exclusively composed of artists. I often notice that when reviewing someones songs to compose a comment always songs - or a whole list if it is not too long - and some prolific artists may have over songs to choose from , there are other commentors with whom I've recently communicated - that tends to imply that RN is a small, genre-connected world.
It should be noted that artists do not often purchase each others songs. However to have your talent recognized and commented on by other artists, who themselves are often talented, is personally very gratifying.
And those who actually take the time to listen to your material - the essential reason most of us create music - is the main reason that number of song plays is more important than size of fanbase to me. It may be another platform to promote music, but it almost seems unknown. To those that know about it, they kind of use it. Reach like minded musicians.
However, if you should pay for a crowd review, be ready for biased "unbiased" opinions. We are a metal band, and submitted to metal reviews, and of our 13 songs, only two "made the cut". We accept that. Not everyone likes it. What we don't accept, is all, not some, but all of the negative reviews scores were from people not in our demographic.
They are listeners of top 40 music, and their comments had to do with "it not being my style" or "sounds too heavy for my tastes". For people who listen to metal and rock, our average was an 8. Reverb nation, waste of money in promotions. Put your money into Facebook bumps, YouTube, or hell, just buy stickers and post em on lamp posts.
Then you'll reach the "same target audience". Ive been using reverberation for years I agree with all other that have voiced that there are constant notifications with the false pretense that you are crawling the charts with popularity Most musicians are not making much money off of this site, so it is very disturbing they they will ask for money so much.
How about they provide some demographics or stats on all of these avenues that they claim will promote your band. Save your money and invest in a new guitar instead of the many ReverbNation scams. I link my website, facebook, twitter, and CD Baby, what reverbnation gives you a place you can put a couple of your songs from your CD on it, a place for people to hear the whole song, and if they want to buy it they can, recomend you put your CD on tunecore, or CD baby, then connect it to reverbnation, put a couple of songs on it, and a couple of videos from youtube, also connect your website to it, the bad thing is there's so many people on it, all the offer they give you, can be taken up, fast, and your left out in the cold, i stopped expecting anything from them, just use them for what i can, what i do is when i get an offer from a major record lable, i use it for my benefit, and link it to my facebook, and twitter.
I have tried for more than a year to update a digital release distributed through Reverbnation without success. It shouldn't be hard for them to follow-up a service you've paid for.
Your music has been selected for insert latest scam. Please folks, don't do it. I am constantly bombarded with this garbage. While it may be an ok site for exposure and I mean just maybe, ok , they are only looking to bleed any penny away from every unsuspecting artist that they can.
Steer clear, and gain exposure the old fashioned way. Anything that was once good about this site, is long gone. Now they send you thousands of notifications telling you how great your band is and how well it's trending and all these opportunities that you've qualified for! If, you're willing to pay them a monthly fee. Short of a landing page, don't waste your time.
If you're willing to work hard enough and put your money into your band to get anywhere with this site. You would get further without them. That money is best suited somewhere else.
That hard work will do you more good somewhere else. All these people have joined fan base and I want to fan them back. I fan them back and get a pop up window that asks questions like others like this artist I just fanned. Please get rid of that.
It's too many key strokes if your trying get through your mail. I just want to get through my mail I don't want that pop up I have to close each time I fan somebody back.
The site does not work well for me because of this and similar things that make it harder to deal with fan mail and what have you. It's better than it used to be but still needs a whole lot of IT work to make things easieer and more interesting. Both the "Apps I have, I don't think you can even get to your mail. Anyhow no popups I have to close I don't need that response; 'Thanks for fanning so and so" how bout these artists?
BS get rid of it. If I wanted that then I'd ask for that but now while I'm answering mail. After 8 years of poor promotion and escalating costs, I am finally leaving Reverbnation.
I am a senior citizen on a small fixed income. The tiny amount I made doesn't even qualify for taxation. Another ripoff. All this site does is ask you for money to help you climb up some imaginary "chart". Im glad I never gave them any of my money and i hope you don't either! I'm DJ transaction. Currently ranked 1 on reverbnation Brooklyn electronic music charts. I had a free account with them for like 8 years.
I never had to pay my way to the top. I made top ten multiple times and got song plays without trying. I don't think this site is as bad as the reviews below say because I really didn't have to pay my way to the top and I got some opportunities here as well. I'm not paid to say any of this stuff. I perfer SoundCloud anyway but it's a nice site. I love playing and writing music so I post songs to get feedback, give feedback, and discover new music.
Yes, I understand a lot of the "fans" who clicked didn't like the first 10 seconds and moved on or those moving from artist to artist hoping to get more clicks on their page. I simply post my music for anybody who will genuinely listen to it and appreciate it which from my experience is a small percentage.
However, it makes it that much more gratifying when someone listens to my songs and gives helpful feedback or criticism. If you are utilizing the platform in hopes of a record deal or international super-stardom, then you are likely naive. If you think you have a chance of going to the top, you shouldn't need promoters and advertisements. It should be grassroots and blowing people away with your recordings and gigs It does NOT work for everybody. I've been enjoying the site for a few years now and have never been charged a penny and have made some cool, interesting connections I wouldn't have made otherwise.
Many of the music superstars in today's music faced very negative reviews from the public during their inception. But with help from the record companies who had faith in them, they have become multi million dollar world famous superstars.
Rumor is that Rod Stewart got a lot of negative reviews on his music during his inception. But now almost everyone I know likes his music. I worked all day to create the song with the richest synthesizer quality so why would it get bad reviews. What the heck? Maybe Santa Maria which really emphasizes Spanish or Latin turned people off.
With a bit of racism in this country. Songs with Spanish titles don't tend to do very well in the mainstream music market and can be controversial.
Maybe it was something else. I know through live performance, social media interaction and through the music industry there are an awful lot of people who love my music. Hundreds of thousands to be exact. Salt Lake City a city of about 7 million, it is hard to achieve that level of recognition.
But I have worked hard and have used the internet as a vehicle to rapidly spread my popularity. The family who owns the studio thoroughly enjoyed working with my music and are a permanent part of my fanbase. I know I am at home in their recording studio anytime.
In fact of the hundreds of thousands of people who like my music, I've only met 3 people that didn't like my music. Plus the obvious novices on Reverbnation. And that's ok because my fanbase is worldwide. I was writing music long before Reverbnation ever existed and before there was an internet as a kid. I have spent hundreds of hours in session with a professional voice trainer as I stretched myself to the professional limit.
I was a member of Sonicbids for a long time but finally cancelled my artist membership because Sonicbids is a spreading cancer some say and they are right. Serious artists like myself don't have time for this kind of nonsense, we're in it for the long haul. Profiteering off the backs of improvised artists who can't ever get ahead because the company intentionally pits against their music. But when people at Reverbnation give my music nothing but negative bias reviews when I pay for reviews I know I have been scammed.
Because actual fans never heard my music in the paid review and it was obviously office staff or other artists who reviewed my music, not actual music fans who are crazy about my music. Hate to say it but my music should have easily scored at 8. I know this from experience and extensive research, as I'm always researching the industry. Some promoters have said they are intimidated by my level of professionalism. This ruins the good faith I had in Reverbnation and makes false advertising seem apparent after I have had a profile on this spot for over a half a decade.
Obviously these people are in love with hard rock music, on drugs or something. They wouldn't give Lady Gaga a good score. I fear Reverbnation is following in the same footsteps as Sonicbids and will also sink their boat like Sonicbids did if Reverbnation does not quickly change its way. There are to many artists and not enough fans on Reverbnation.
I think I will cancel my paid membership go back to the free forever membership and sign on with a site like Airplay direct where radio promoters would bend over backwards to have my world class music on their radio rotation. Reverbnation, where they Never answer the telephone. There is almost no clear line of communication with promoters.
